At the recent London Comic Con I was asked what my favourite game is. I said it was probably Orcarina of Time, but afterwards I began to think, is it really? And now I have decided that whilst I love Orcarina of Time it is not the game that I have the best memories playing. That honour belongs to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion was the first game I lost days to, I invested so many hours into that game and loved every minute of it.
One of the memories that sticks with me the most is that my first character loved to walk. Oblivion was my first Elder scrolls game and I was not aware that you could fast travel... I completed the main quest, the dark brotherhood, the thieves guild, and I was half way through the mages guild and the half way through the fighters guild too before I realised fast travel was in the game. However, whilst this sounds incredibly boring, my first character was and still is the best character I have. I discovered so many side quests and had so much fun planning my time so that I did all the quests in one city before walking to another.
Another Oblivion memory revolves around the duplication glitch. For those of you who don't know this glitch allowed you to duplicate most items in the game by drawing your bow, unequiping your arrows and then dropping the item you wished to duplicate. This meant that players could have hundreds of grand soul gems, or hundreds of expensive weapons or armour that you could then sell to a shop and make enough gold to buy the Imperial City. However, there was a problem with this. Through out the game you collect these items called Sigil Stones, which are these orbs that you could use to enchant your weapons. So I decided to duplicate these Sigil Stones so that I can use these great enchantments several times. However, I did this on a hill. The Sigil Stones then started rolling, and they were hundreds of them. This cause my frame rate to drop so low it created a death zone in my map where I could not enter without my game nearly dying. To this day that death zone is still there, every now and then I try to lower the numbers but its so boring.
Its stories like these that re-enforce my love for Oblivion because they are so much fun to talk about with your friends. Hearing their favourite moments and discussing things that even after three hundred plus hours in the game I still have not discovered. Bethesda is one of my favourite game studios because they simply created a master piece that, yes had its flaws, but created so many stories and memories that it is my favourite game ever.
